Boomtown Festival (2013)

Technology:
Offline usage, Maps, Augmented Reality, Facebook, Instagram, LastFM

This is my vision of what a festival app should be, with real-time data, GPS, augmented reality, search, and reminders, all available without connectivity. It is a prototype app that was produced using the data from the Boomtown Fair of 2013 in Winchester. It incorporates a multitude of technology aimed at helping festival-goers get the most from the event. Features include:

  • Real-time programme information, designed to work offline but also able to receive updates if network is available
  • The ability to mark certain artists as favourites and be reminded when they are about to perform
  • Full Artist search including the ability to search by genre
  • Artist photos and description, courtesy of the LastFM API
  • A map of the site, with details of who is currently performing and how far away it is
  • An augmented reality view allowing the user to hold the phone up and see who is playing around them
  • A shared photo stream linked to a Facebook event
  • Instagram integration
  • A framework for distributing an on-site newspaper to all attendees
  • A companion admin app that enables officials to make adjustments to the location of stages while on-site

An unofficial app, this was created entirely with publicly-available data from the published programme. All artwork remains the property of Boomtown Festival.
